This essay will be based on the perspectives of Mumbai through three main protagonists which are Asha, Abdul and Sunil. In this book Katherine boo tells us about their life in annawadi, it starts of by telling us about Abdul. Abdul is a very hard worker, he has to sort out all the rubbish, he gioes around the whole of annawadi and gets rubbish and takes it home, he sorts out all the rubbish that his family takes and the rubbish he finds all around annawadi. he has to do this to survivie otherwise hsi family wouldnt survive.
Abdul is the main character is the second generation garbage picker, he picks up use full garbage for his family so they can use it to survive in the slums. he is named the breadwinner, because he is the one who goes around the whole of annawadi picking up garbage. in the book it says that he is accused of the one legs death, which is fatima. she was burnt to death. Abdul and his dad was accused of her death, even though it wasnt abdul and his father who killed fatima in such a horrible way.
Asha is the mother manju, she is the unoffical slumlord, woman slumlords in india is very rare and not common. she’s has a son called rahul as well, her son rahul is friends with mirchi, they go to the same school and he does some work at a hotel. mirchi is abduls younger brother. ashas husband is an alcoholic and does very little to help asha with her problems. asha started with nothing like the others of where she lives and now she is the slumlord, and always men are the slumlords but this time a woman is a slumlord which is very rare and surprising.
sunil is an male adolescent, who got kicked out the orphanage because he was too old for it and they said they couldn’t handle him.
